Position:

The Oregon College of Art and Craft seeks a Visiting Ceramics Faculty and Technician. This is an exempt full-time position with maximum two year appointment with yearly renewal evaluation. The Visiting faculty and technician in Ceramics teaches two undergraduate courses per year as an instructor of record and manages and maintains the Ceramics facility in support of both degree and continuing education programs. Position Summary:

Visiting Faculty and Technician in Ceramics: OCAC seeks to hire an individual, collegial and approachable, who will bring diverse perspectives to the department with an extensive knowledge of Ceramics techniques and processes. OCAC seeks to hire a self motivated individual who will excel at working with a broad range of students in both degree and continuing education programs. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional teaching effectiveness, be able to organize the studio, purchase and maintain needed equipment and materials, and be an advocate and representative for the Ceramics department to various college and outside entities.

The visiting faculty and Technician in Ceramics reports to the Ceramics Department Head, supervises 2-5 work study students and supports continuing education programs as well as degree programs. The teaching responsibilities in the degree program requires approximately 12 hours per week and technician responsibilities requires 28 hours per week during the academic year. In the summer (12 weeks), there is no teaching assignment in the degree program and technician duties may require 20 hours per week. Additionall opportunities in teaching continuing education classes/workshops in the summer may be available per individual’s interest and qualification with additional compensation. The salary including teaching and facility management is $31,000 with benefits.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Teaches two for credit degree courses per academic year as instructor of record.
• Serves on a faculty committee as part of service to the college.
• May serve on undergraduate and graduate Thesis, Independent Study and Tutorial advising and committees.
• Oversees the organization, operation, maintenance and repair of studio, tools and equipment including kilns and firings.
• Maintains current equipment and materials inventories, purchasing for all classes and workshops, building relationships with vendors and business office.
• Prepares and supervises preparation of clay and glazes.
• Oversees departmental safety requirements including disposal of hazardous materials, kiln safety, and personal safety equipment.
• Supervises Work Study students.
• Prepares or supervises the preparation of the studio for classes and workshops.
• Oversees scheduled studio end-of-semester clean-up days (Fall and Spring Semesters).
• Supports and Manages other college wide needs and events
• Other Studio duties as needed.
• May be responsible for the studio in the absence of the Department Head.

Minimum Qualifications:

• MFA or equivalent terminal degree
• Strong creative practice with a proven record of effectiveness and growth
• Advanced training in ceramics, including a broad range of ceramic processes from clay and glaze formulation to kiln technology and repair.
• Understanding firing theory with the ability to load and fire a variety of kilns
• Strong problem solving skills as well as supervisory and communication skills
• Attentiveness to detail with a sense of humor, patience and diplomacy

Preferences:

• Previous teaching experience in degree program as instructor of record
• Flexibility to work across majors and to collaborate with administrators, faculty and students Ability to teach in the continuing education program
• Ability to assist facility maintenance, including but not limited to construction, electrical and mechanical
