I am interested in the space between functional ceramics and sculpture – wondering what would happen if I borrowed the vocabulary from one to speak the language of the other? At times this translates to exploring the sculptural possibilities of everyday objects. At other times, I’m interested in forms that allude to the idea of containment, abstract sculptural forms as containers. Underlying it all is an interest in the material language of clay and the language of form.
-- Chiho Tokita
Born in Tokyo and growing up in New York City, Chiho Tokita is an American-Canadian ceramic artist based in Toronto. Her work has been supported by Craft Ontario, the Toronto Arts Council and the Ontario Arts Council, and an artist residency at Guldagergaard ICRC in Skaelskor, Denmark. Her engagement with clay began with a cylinder – doubling as a door-stopper – that somehow seemed like the most amazing thing.
