Wei Cheng ( She/Her )

Artist Statement

Having grown up and received my education in both China and Canada, my practice explores the intersections of cultural heritage, personal identity, and bilingual experience. Rooted in the traditions of ceramics, my sculptural and installation works weave classical techniques with contemporary forms, found objects, and mixed media. I am drawn to the narratives embedded in materials and processes, treating clay as both a physical substance and a conceptual bridge between past and present.

By reimagining traditional aesthetics and integrating unexpected elements, I reflect on cultural hybridity and the stories that objects carry across time and place. For me, clay is a language of transformation and continuity—its tactile immediacy and resilience allow me to honor tradition while engaging with the complexities of contemporary experience.

Bio

Wei Cheng is a Vancouver-based artist working primarily with ceramics and found objects. She studied at Langara College and Emily Carr University of Art + Design, where she developed a strong technical foundation and a deep appreciation for the expressive potential of clay. At the heart of Wei’s practice is a fascination with the intricate and fleeting moments of everyday life. Through the thoughtful integration of found objects and fired clay, she creates distinctive works that invite curiosity, reflection, and a dialogue between spaces and time. She approaches clay as both archive and language, exploring how form and surface can hold memory and meaning. Wei’s practice also extends into performance and installation, expanding the possibilities of ceramics and challenging the boundaries between craft, object, and contemporary art.
