Ceramic Studio Assistant/Residency
Bard College at Simon’s Rock is seeking applications for a Ceramic Studio Assistant for the fall and spring semesters of the academic year 2016-17 (mid- August through mid-May). This position pays $12 per hour and is open to either one person at 24 hours per week, or two people who would function as a team and each work 16 hours per week. The position grants 24-hour studio access to a private but shared studio, as well as all ceramic, woodworking and metalworking facilities. The appointment begins and ends one week before and after each semester. This is a one-year position with the potential of renewal for a second year.
The primary responsibilities of this position are to help maintain studio cleanliness, keep the studio and equipment organized, clean, and functioning smoothly, oversee the loading/firing/unloading of gas/electric/wood kilns, oversee clay reclamation, keep dry materials and glazes inventoried and organized, manage work-study students, and assist with wood firings and wood preparation. Additional responsibilities may require supervising the wood/metal shop during open studio hours as well as ongoing projects or tasks that help to make the ceramic and design studio a more user-friendly, efficient, and technically advanced place to work.
Standards of performance for both positions include a working knowledge of clay/ glaze materials and plaster, loading/firing/unloading of electric and gas kilns and a wood kiln. The ability to train students on safe studio practices, the ability to work with students at various skill levels, and the ability to successfully interface with faculty, staff and administration are required.
Actively creating and developing one’s own ceramic work in the studio is an essential part of this position.
