Functional/Utilitarian

Drumbakfiets from the Bikelsile collaboration

The Drumbakfiets was created in collaboration with Bicycle mechanic Brian McDermott, and with the consultation of Doug Kruger seen playing the drums. The cargo bike portion was made from a discarded wallmart mountian bike, a used bed frame, a discarded kids BMX fork, a piece of box tube steel, a broken mid century chair, a […]

Seed Collector Series: No. 1 Anise Hyssops

Slip cast and hand built porcelain, iron stoneware,  marbled reclaimed clay & post consumer glaze/underglaze conglomerate material and sink sludge, leather, glass & Plant matter.

A sculptural Vessel made for seed drying and saving. Comprised of a deep iron rich clay basin embedded in marbled clay and postconsumer glaze waste material, that is propped up on 3 mushroom like feat. The feat extend past the lip of the basin, and support three slip cast, white porcelain bones that are bound together at the top with leather lattice work, which allows the Anise Hyssops to dangle freely, dry and release its seeds into the basin. A little pour spout directs the seeds when ready to gather and deposit into a container for safe storage.

This is a sculptural diagram of the bisection of the MT Granite Design Seed Bank. It exhibits the double walled, inner seed capsule that helps to regulate the seed's temperature (which should stay around 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit when buried below permafrost). The Seed Bank Project is a multi-era, multi-disciplinary project meant to span decades, cultures and (hopefully) climate phenomena here on planet earth. Hand-made, double-walled porcelain seed vessels are given out to collaborators, who then fill them with seeds that have precious ecological and culturalsignificance to the region in which they call home. The banks are completely autonomous from human maintenance, meaning theyare specifically designed to control the interior seed capsule’s humidity, light and temperature when buried below permafrostutilizing both ancient and modern technologies. The screw top cap is sealed with beeswax to ensure no moisture or light can reach the seeds. This sustains the seed’s ability to stay viable for as long as its’ DNA will allow.

As Above, So Below

Unfired ewer pipe clay, vessels in vessels, photo shop repetition. This is one of a number of works from the residency at Mission Sewer Pipe in Phoenix, AZ. The factory/residency tech at the time, Hans Miles, later glazed and fired all the pots and gave them to workers at the factory.

Fruitfulness II

“All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single tiny decision.” By James Clear “The compound effect is the principle of reaping huge rewards from a series of small smart choices.” By Darren Hardy My technique of hand-building with tiny pellets of clay springs from a fundamental principle that “from many can come one.” Each bit of clay holds the mundane - my fingerprints and the sublime - my mood. Each also shows the progress of my work in its journey toward completion. It’s symbolic of human lives, consisting of many thousands of simple days and the planting of seeds.

The Old School Farm Pottery Project includes a functional tableware line created by Julia and featured in several Nashville farm-to-table restaurants including The Old School Farm to Table, and 1892 Restaurant (with photographs by fine art portraiture artist and photojournalist Anthony Scarlati.)

The 'Art' of pottery occurs during the Old School Farm Pottery project in the making; through equal and fair employment opportunities, and in the communal and vulnerable dining experience.

A noun(perhaps pottery) may not be known without an experience. Therefore, nouns are not simply objects, and terms of ownership come to question. Head Chef's Dylan Morrison, Kirstie Bidwell and Pastry Chef Danielle Veit create a moment beyond the potter's control when they capture a moment of beauty through the voice of our most dear commodity: food.

These moments, that are larger than the vision of each collaborator transforms into something beyond us. As artists, we must choose to embrace or deny this chemical transformation. I believe, it is not something that may not be ignored since "art'' as ''we'' know it occurs within a social collective or culture.
