Sculpture / Ceramics Technician – Marshall University

Marshall University in Huntington, WV is seeking candidates for a full-time (9-month contract), Sculpture / Ceramics Technician (Academic Lab Manager II). This is a salaried position with full benefits. The position includes a studio space and full access to the studio.
Salary range: $26,676-$33,300- Salary is commensurate with experience and internal equity.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline, computer literacy.
Experience:
  • Six months of related technical shop supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee skilled and unskilled persons using hand and power equipment in a studio art setting.
  • Supervising and directing the work activities of assigned laboratory support staff and/or student employees, as well as ensuring the proper training of and procedures for the laboratory to maintain the health and safety of all students and personnel.
  • Proven experience designing, operating, and maintaining/repairing of major stationary shop equipment (including but not limited to: table saw, band saw, arc, MIG/TIG welders, CNC routers, laser cutters, and 3D printers: gas and electric kilns, pottery wheels, clay mixers, ceramic shell casting systems, and all hand-held power tools).
  • Proven experience with a wide range of 3D studio materials and processes in sculpture and ceramics; capability in light construction remodel/repair projects; strong commitment to safe work practices; and ability to lift 50 pounds, work in supervised/unsupervised settings, and keep ceramics and sculpture shop supplies inventory.
  • Work requires advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and tasks are performed under limited supervision through specialized tools and established standards.
  • Problems faced in this position are varied, complex, and occasionally ill-defined, requiring some analysis or interpretation of the situation.
  • Errors could easily result in substantial costs, inconveniences, and disruption of services within the affected area.
