Allegheny College, a small selective liberal arts college located in northwest Pennsylvania, with an increasingly diverse student population, invites applications for the position of Technical Assistant/Instructor. This is a three-year full-time 10-month exempt administrative position beginning August 1, 2018. Reporting to the Chair of the Art Department this position is intended to provide technical support and instruction for the studio areas within the Art Department.
Teaching load is up to one course per semester as needed depending on expertise and may include teaching in the college-wide, first-year/sophomore seminars that emphasize writing and speaking. Position also involves 25-30 hours per week of departmental technician work, which includes evenings and limited weekend hours to oversee student use of facilities for departmental courses and for student senior projects.
Primary responsibilities include kiln firings (gas and electric), clay and glaze making in ceramics, and oversight of woodshop, welding (arc, oxy-acetylene, and mig), and bronze facilities in the sculpture area. Additional duties include assistance with the general upkeep of studios and equipment maintenance, overseeing student workers, ordering materials and other duties as assigned.
The technician is provided a small studio and use of Art Department equipment and facilities year round.
The technician serves an important role as a mentor to undergraduate students. It is expected that the technician will continue their studio practice, be an active maker and have a presence in the studio modeling a professional artistic practice to the Art Department student community.
M.F.A. required in either sculpture or ceramics. Teaching experience preferred.
