Position: One Year—Visiting Assistant Professor of Art

Responsibilities: The Department of Art and Art History at Kalamazoo College is seeking a ceramist and/or sculptor to serve as a one-year full-time sabbatical replacement for a combined ceramics/sculpture position. Course load is two undergraduate courses in each of three 11-week terms (6 courses total) and supervision of Senior Individualized Projects in ceramics and sculpture. Teaching responsibilities include thematic courses in introductory through advanced ceramics (functional and sculptural) and sculpture (mixed-media, no foundry). Ability to teach wheel throwing is desirable. Responsibilities include management and supervision of the ceramics and sculpture facilities. Candidates are expected to have a high aptitude and interest in undergraduate teaching within a liberal arts environment. Participation in departmental activities and service is expected.
Qualifications: MFA in ceramics or sculpture required. University or college-level teaching experience required. Evidence of ongoing creative work and exhibition record is expected. Experience managing a ceramics or sculpture studio preferred. Ability to maintain the ceramics and sculpture facilities required.
Appointment Dates: August 29, 2016—June 11, 2017

Department Information: There are four full-time faculty positions in the Department of Art and Art History. The department graduates between 10 and 18 Studio Art Majors each year. The ceramics facility includes 16 electric wheels, two gas and three electric kilns, glaze and clay mixing facilities and two pugmills. The sculpture facility includes a woodshop (supervised by a part-time technician), mold area, two mig welders and oxy-acetylene set-up.

A complete application must include a cover letter outlining specific areas of expertise and approach to pedagogy, a CV including a listing of all courses taught (with the possibility that syllabi may be requested later), an artist statement, and 20 images of personal artwork and ten examples of student work.
