The Department of Art at Western Washington University (WWU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Ceramics and Foundations, to begin Fall 2016. Salary is commensurate with experience. Candidates must be qualified to teach all levels of courses in ceramics as well as 3D foundations courses.
The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of current and emerging trends in contemporary ceramic art, providing evidence of proficiency in established and experimental approaches. The candidate will demonstrate knowledge of innovative pedagogy in ceramics and 3D foundations, with teaching experience that integrates new technologies and digital applications with traditional processes. The person hired for this position will manage the comprehensive ceramic studio and share responsibility for the management of the 3D foundations studio. The person will also teach other Foundation courses and senior and BFA seminars, as well as participate in advising and university, college, and departmental service and faculty governance. Western Washington University, located approximately a 1-1/2 hour drive from Vancouver and Seattle, enjoys a strong reputation as a quality, comprehensive institution of higher education. Position Responsibilities:
- Teach ceramics courses at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels, incorporating new technologies with traditional processes
- Teach 3D foundations courses
- Manage comprehensive ceramic studio
- Share responsibility for management of 3D foundations studio
- Teach Senior/BFA Seminar and Professional Practices courses as needed
- Participate in foundations curriculum design and teach other foundations courses as needed
- Participate in student advisement
- Maintain an active program of scholarship/creative activity
- Participate in university, college, and departmental committee work and governance activities
Required Qualifications:
- MFA or equivalent terminal degree
- Strong exhibition record
- Two years minimum teaching experience at the university level in ceramics and 3D foundations, beyond graduate assistantships
- Experience managing a ceramic studio
- Expertise in a range of traditional ceramic processes
- Proficiency with new ceramic technologies and processes
- Extensive knowledge of contemporary ceramic art, including installation and interdisciplinary practices
- Knowledge of art history and critical theory as related to contemporary art practice
- Ability to work effectively with diverse students and colleagues
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience integrating new technologies and digital media with traditional processes, from foundation to advanced level courses
- National, and/or international exhibition record
