This team-taught class will cover ceramic hand-building techniques for creating figurative sculptural work, with an emphasis on personal expression. We will examine the challenges of creating mystery and power in artworks that spring from life experiences. A wide range of technical and aesthetic concerns will be addressed. In addition to technical demonstrations and work time in the studio, the class will incorporate image presentation and discussion about issues that have bearing on the choice to utilize the human body as our primary artistic mode. With these discussions, we expand the realm of the figure and influence each other with regards to how we think about the body and its unique role in visual culture.
