MARTINSONS AWARD
Exhibition of International Ceramics Competition

Celebrating the Centenary of the Latvian State, the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics, in cooperation with the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, announces a call for applications for the MARTINSONS AWARD, an International Ceramics Competition within the framework of the 2nd Latvia International Ceramics Biennale in 2018.
Individual artists, as well as groups of artists, are invited to submit their artworks for the MARTINSONS AWARD International Ceramics Competition. The applicants are not restricted by age or nationality. Each applicant (individual artist or a group of artists) can submit only one artwork. Artists awarded with Gold, Silver or Bronze prizes in both National and International categories during MARTINSONS AWARD Competition in 2016, cannot participate in the Competition in 2018.
The artwork submitted for the MARTINSONS AWARD Competition has no thematic restrictions. The ceramic component of the artwork must be at least 80%, and it must have been created in 2017-2018. Artwork must not be displayed in other competitions, as well as published in catalogues. The minimum size of artwork should be equal or exceed 25cm at least in one dimension. The maximum size has no restrictions.
In order to apply for participation in International Ceramics Competition exhibition artists have to fill in ONLINE APPLICATION FORM until April the 1st 2018.
Submitted applications will be reviewed by the jury:
- Dainis Pundurs (LATVIA), artist, associated professor of Ceramics Department of Latvian Art Academy, National Gold Prize winner at MARTINSONS AWARD Competition in 2016;
- Marie-Josée Comello (THE NETHERLANDS), artist, International Gold Prize winner at MARTINSONS AWARD Competition in 2016;
- Ilona Romule (LATVIA), artist, council member of International Academy of Ceramics;
- Bernd Pfannkuche (GERMANY), publisher of NEUE KERAMIK/NEW CERAMICS Magazine, member of International Academy of Ceramics;
- Anthony Stellaccio (USA), artist, curator, researcher, member of International Academy of Ceramics, Artaxis International Coordinator;
- Claudia Casali (ITALY), art historian, Director of the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza;
- Valentīns Petjko (LATVIA), artist, curator, Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics.
The selection of the submitted applications will be processed in 2 stages. On the 1st stage the jury will select the works that will be part of the competition exhibition MARTINSONS AWARD that will take place in Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre from July 6th till September 9th, 2018. On the 2nd stage the selection of the winning works will be made by the jury evaluating exhibited works in presence. 6 works will be awarded – 3 awards in National category and 3 awards in International category. The artists of selected winning artworks will receive cash prize from EUR 2000 to EUR 5000. Awarded works will be included in contemporary ceramics collection of the organizers and will be further exhibited in Latvia and abroad.
