Assistant Professor, Ceramics position – University of Memphis

January 12, 2018 by Submission Form

The Department of Art at the University of Memphis is seeking a tenure-track faculty member committed to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Ceramics. The tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor will start on August 20, 2018. We seek an artist whose practice demonstrates a critical and technical understanding of contemporary issues in the creative and scholarly fields of ceramic art, the history of art, and the relationship between art and culture. In addition to maintaining a successful practice as a ceramic artist, primary responsibilities of the position involve teaching and curricular development in the ceramic program with an interest in the following areas: glaze chemistry, clay formulation, and kiln fabrication. Ideal candidates will also possess secondary strengths in theory, practice, and the history of issues of community engagement, gender, race, and demonstrable examples of other experiences such as performance, installation, digital, and/or video art. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to working with a diverse student population.

Review of applications will begin on January 16, 2018

This position typically requires a 3/3 teaching load, primarily in ceramics. The faculty member would teach, advise, and recruit at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels. The position also includes administrative oversight of the ceramics studio with two gas kilns, seven electric kilns, a raku firing area, glazing and clay mixing area, a general instruction area and an advanced studio area. Other duties will include developing curriculum, engaging in professional activities, as well as participating in department, college, and university-wide service.
