The studio technician’s primary responsibility is to provide in-class and out-of-class faculty and student support as needed. This may including proctoring out-of-class “open hours” to give students working on projects technical and material assistance on their projects. Additionally, the ceramic technician is responsible for kiln loading/unloading, kiln firing, kiln maintenance, clay preparation and recycling and glaze mixing, among other ongoing material support.

Essential Functions:
Maintains art studio health and safety policies and procedures including the safe storage/disposal of hazardous materials and regular inspection of ceramic studio equipment and tools to identify maintenance and repair needs.
Introduces Dickinson students in the use of ceramic studio for the purpose of art making. Assist students with technical solutions related to assigned problems requiring equipment supervision. Facilitates the educational needs by providing proper oversight and technical supervision of students outside of scheduled class time.
Maintains inventory for ceramics tools, equipment, and consumable supplies. Communicates with ceramic area faculty on studio needs including preparation of equipment for classes/workshops and monitoring studio priorities and budgets. Coordinates for the purchase approved equipment and materials, as needed.
Works with departmental staff/faculty to support studio-related special events including artist workshops and residencies in the sculpture lab and supervision of art students who may not be enrolled in a ceramics course during a particular semester, but using the workshop facilities to incorporate ceramic elements into projects from other courses.
General technical support for additional studio art classrooms as requested or as time permits. This might include assisting in the maintenance of the sculpture facilities, the painting and drawing classrooms, the printmaking studio and the facilities that support photography.
Special projects in association with requests from the senior studio art technician or ceramics faculty. This might include the construction of equipment or kilns required for experimental or alternative ceramic firing methods, among other one-time needs.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree with 1-3 years of relevant experience. Master’s degree preferred, but not required.
Previous work experience as a studio technician, studio manager or as a practicing artist who maintained a professional studio will be considered as experience that may be counted toward the education requirements.
Physical Demands:
Physical Demands that are related to working in a ceramics facility including, but not limited to lifting heavy items, loading kilns and pugging clay.

20 hours a week that will likely have some flexibility. Schedule can vary semester to semester depending on the class meeting times. Occasional weekend hours when kilns are being fired.
