We are seeking a colleague who is an expert in the discipline of Ceramics, as evidenced by academic achievement, professional activity in the field which includes an active exhibition record (featuring vetted institutions/galleries/ museums), and who has the vision to develop and expand the Ceramics/ 3-D side of the Studio Art program from a place of experience and excitement.
Candidates possessing a demonstrated expertise in the discipline of Ceramics (both as an academic and an artist), who are student-focused, and who approach their roles as educator and mentor through the lens that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates diversity, equity, inclusion, and access, are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Studio Art Program at San Diego Miramar College is boutique in size, with one additional full-time faculty member, who is a subject matter expert within the 2-D Studio side of the program. The successful candidate will be the sole, full-time Professor in the Ceramics/ 3-D area and will work collaboratively with the full-time, 2-D faculty member to further develop the Studio Art Program as a whole. In addition to Studio Art, the Department of Visual and Performing Arts is also home to the disciplines of Art History, Music, and Graphics.
While curriculum expansion and innovation is welcomed and encouraged, current Ceramic and 3-D Studio offerings include: Ceramics (I-III), 3-D Design, and Contemporary Crafts (I-III).
The Studio Art facilities consist of two, newly built, mixed-use studios (3-D/ 2-D).
Our Ceramics/ 3-D Studio is outfitted with an automatic roll up door leading to an outdoor classroom and kiln yard.
The studio hosts:
- Two (2) Skutt electric kilns
- Two (2) Geil gas kilns
- One (1) raku kiln
- Laguna spray booth with compressor and spray guns/ airbrushes
- Brent slab roller/ extruder
- Peter Pugger Mixer/Pug Mill
- Twenty-four (24) Brent electric pottery wheels
- Glaze-mixing studio
- Damp room
- Various power and hand tools
- Faculty office connected to the Ceramics studio
The successful candidate will support our students by developing curriculum reflective of current pedagogy and professional trends in both the Ceramics and 3-D Studio areas, as well as by cultivating an inclusive learning environment as part of a socially and culturally engaged college.
The teaching load will consist of undergraduate, transfer-based, foundation-level courses within the disciplines of Ceramics (primarily) and 3-D Studio.
As a member of the faculty, the successful candidate will also actively participate in the continued development of the Studio Art Program, with a focus on and ownership of curriculum development and expansion within the Ceramics/ 3-D side of the program.
The successful candidate will also assume a leadership role, overseeing the basic operations of the 3-D studio, including but not limited to inventory management/ ordering, as well as working collaboratively with Facilities and the Dean of Liberal Arts, to ensure operational function, safety, and to direct general maintenance.
Additional duties include but are not limited to:
- Advising/ mentoring students
- Participation in service responsibilities, at all levels (District, College, School, Department)
- Participation in shared-governance
- Maintaining office hours
- Overseeing duties for Instructional Lab Technician
- Working collaboratively and productively with colleagues campus-wide
