There’s a nice interview of the new NCECA President-Elect, Chris Staley on the artblog, Louise & Maurice. In the interview/article titled, “Chris Staley and the Family of Things”, writer Erinn M. Cox talks with Chris about making pots that look like “they are still becoming”, aging, craft, and many other topics.
In the interview, Chris says about aging, “I often anthropomorphize my pots. So yes the skin of pots tells a story of what the pots have been through. Every morning when I wake up and look in the mirror my face has changed ever so slightly. Most of us have a hard time with aging, yet it is inevitable. That said, we appreciate objects and people who have stood up to the test of time. So I scratch, grind, wash, hit and whatever else I can do to the clay to tell a story of the passage of time. Increasingly, old people intrigue me, because if fate will have it, they are my future. I have always loved the pictures of Georgia O’Keeffe in her old age. There is a quiet dignity in faces of the old among us.”
