Duties & Responsibilities:
Maintains and operates a wide variety of specialized ceramic related equipment including gas and electric kilns, wheels, clay mixing equipment, slab roller, extruders, grinding wheel, central vacuum system, wet saw, spray booth, compressor and hot box. Also maintains and operates miscellaneous hand and power tools. Responsible for ensuring the safety of students and community members while instructing and monitoring the use of the Bailey gas kiln and the large Reduction kiln. Also monitors the loading, firing and unloading of these gas kilns.
Works with the Director of Operations in scheduling these kilns. Responsible for the self-inspection of the Studio which is then recorded in EH&S. Supports the Director of Operations to oversee Studio compliances with Health and Safety Regulations and assists the Directors of Operations and Education to oversee sustainable studio practices. Orders and maintains Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Assists the Director of Operations with outreach events such as Harvard departmental retreats; assists the Director of Education with academic collaborations such as Anthropology 1010 and the Graduate School of Design Ceramics Labs. Responsible for ordering, receiving and storing clay materials, kiln repair supplies; and maintains contact with appropriate vendors.
Works with the Director of Operations to develop and implement budget for studio maintenance.Provides onÂsite supervision, instruction, and directs the work of direct reports (monthly temp payroll) including two clay mixing technicians, two glaze and materials room technicians, one plaster room technician and one kiln room technician. Supervises the testing and mixing of over 100 glazes. Assists and supports the Directors of Operations and Education in implementing studio policies and practices and special projects such as setting up and dismantling of exhibitions in Gallery 224

Basic Qualifications:
A minimum of two years work experience as a ceramics technician (any combination of training, education, and experience). Must have knowledge of ceramic terminology, policies, procedures, functions and practices.
Additional Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; respond to a wide range of highly technical questions, establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, studio participants, and the general public. Ability to work with a diverse range of students. Proficiency required in Macintosh operating system and the following software: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Filemaker Pro and HyperGlaze. Familiarity with ceramics programs at other art schools and universities. Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
