When building, I continuously experiment with loose and organic forms and never set expectations for how a piece will come out. Creating handbuilt pots allows me to make unconventional forms whose main objective is to elevate the surface design. Atmospheric firing techniques such as salt and soda enhance the relationship between form and surface. Similarly to the way that I build, this firing process takes away any expectations for a piece and ensures that every pot will be unique and unable to be replicated. I am focused on ornamentation and simply doing things because they are attractive to me in either process, form, texture, or color. I am intentional with the playful and sometimes tenuous form and function of my pottery. The dialogue between user and form is thought-provoking yet playful. 

Hailey Piché is currently an Artist in Residence at Queen City Clay in Cincinnati Ohio. Prior to being at QCC, she was a Post Baccalaureate at Western Michigan University, and received her Bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University as a double major in Ceramics and Psychology. In addition to her education, Hailey completed an apprenticeship with John Balistreri and was an instructor of Ceramics at the Delaware Arts Castle.
