Hyun Jin Ahn ( They / She )

Artist Statement

Hyun Jin Ahn is drawn to the question of how idiomatic expressions come to carry meaning for an individual—more precisely, to the social contexts in which we reach for such language when the heart swells beyond what ordinary words can hold. Growing up beside her grandmother, Ahn would overhear the idioms the elderly woman murmured while watching television, as strangers' joys and misfortunes unfolded on screen—phrases like Haneuldo musimhasiji ("Even heaven has no mercy") or Naneun motari ("This is more than I can bear"). Ahn did not fully grasp what those words meant at the time, but she understood what they were doing: saying what could not otherwise be said. Since then, idioms have come to signify, for the artist, something beyond mere expressions of grief—everyday allegories that fold reality into metaphor, a language pushed to its limit, medium and material at once. Worn smooth by countless mouths and carrying the grain of lived experience, these expressions are quietly disappearing, and Ahn hopes they will not vanish but be recorded, so that their richness is not lost. Her practice, then, is to weave idioms that are private, yet were surely spoken by someone, somewhere, into her own personal narrative—holding fast in clay these vanishing words. And when another idiom rises to the lips of those standing before her work, the record ceases to be hers alone.

Bio

Ahn received her B.F.A. in Ceramic Crafts from the College of Fine Arts, Kookmin University, and is currently an M.F.A. candidate in Ceramic Arts at Ewha Womans University. Participating in Eumbanjung: Protest by Young Artists (University Alliance PACO, Seoul, 2020) sparked her interest in giving voice, through her work, to the people of her own time. With WTMH: Welcome to My Home (Experimental Space PADO, Seoul, 2021), she began to engage in earnest with the space of the home and the ceramic objects placed within it. She went on to found and run Sto Studio, a ceramic workshop, and Heut, a ceramic jewelry brand, experimenting with the points where her work meets people’s daily lives and bodies. In 2024, her activities extended to where craft meets the city: she took part in Seoul Crafts at the Craft Trend Fair (COEX, Seoul) and the Cube Member Exhibition at the Seoul Craft Creation Support Center, was selected as a finalist in the Seoul Specialized Product Development Contest, and served as a professional member of the Seoul Craft Creation Support Center(2024).
