Artist Statement
The work I create is designed to entertain and provide a sense of joy. Cheerful surfaces and simple forms are an intentional invitation to engage my pottery. I compose layers of color and pattern, bringing together stained and burnished surfaces, to suggest an emotional duality between happiness and despair. The work reflects influences with American folk art, mid-century motifs, and my personal interests in both real and idealized domestic landscapes.
Bio
Jason Bige Burnett graduated from Western Kentucky University with a BFA in ceramics and BAs in both printmaking and graphic design. He then continued his education for two years at the renowned Penland Schoolof Crafts as a core fellowship student and spent a year as an artist-inresidence at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN. He has taught many ceramic surface design workshops at various locations including Baltimore Clayworks, MudFire, Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts, and Santa Fe Clay. His ceramics have been exhibited nationally, and he has been featured in publications such as Pottery Making Illustrated, Ceramics Monthly (Emerging Artist in 2013), American Craft Magazine, and regional magazines such as
Carolina Home + Garden and WNC Magazine. In addition to being featured in the book 500
Prints on Clay (Lark Crafts, 2013) Jason is the author of Graphic Clay: Ceramic Surfaces and Printed Image Transfer Techniques (Lark Crafts, 2015). Jason currently lives and works as a fulltime studio artist in Bakersville, NC.
