Tennessee Tech is seeking applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Clay. Screening date: February 22nd, 2018
Job Purpose
Teach courses in the BFA clay curriculum, advise majors in clay concentration, and fulfill service mission for the School of Art, Craft, and Design, Tennessee Tech University.
Essential Functions
Teach courses at beginning through advanced levels in the BFA clay curriculum. Advise majors in clay concentration. Lead development of the clay curriculum and recruitment of clay students. Educate students in the full range of clay, glaze and firing options, and their use in traditional and contemporary studio practices. Responsible for safety and operations in the clay studio. Oversee maintenance, repair and replacement of equipment, including the full range of kilns. Supervise artist in residence. Oversee equipment and supply budget; keep inventory and order supplies. Support SAC&D development efforts. Participate in providing and engaging visiting artists that are on campus. Plan exhibitions and workshops. Perform service assignments at the departmental and university level. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MFA from an accredited institution in ceramics. Two years (4 semesters) prior university or college level teaching experience. Broad knowledge of ceramic history and contemporary trends, including functional and sculptural ceramics, and the range of contemporary practices. Professional competence with the potter’s wheel, hand-building, clay and glaze formulation. Broad competence in firing processes including low-fire, midrange, high-fire, oxidation and reduction. Familiarity with kiln design and construction. Familiarity with basic plaster mold technology. Significant regional and/or national exhibition record. Demonstrated commitment to preparing students for a professional studio career.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional full-time ceramics teaching experience at the university or college level. Strong national exhibition record. Studio and teaching experience in a variety of firing methods, including salt, soda, and wood. Professional competence in the design and construction of kilns. Experience with software and digital technologies appropriate to design, production and promotion in ceramics. Experience and commitment to support the development of the entrepreneurial outlook and skills of BFA students. Established connections with professional and artistic organizations and communities supporting ceramics, and the ability to mentor students’ professional development.
