The Director of Ceramics is responsible for taking care of all aspects of the running of the ceramic program at Castle Hill. This includes the smooth, safe and efficient running of workshops, daily maintenance of the ceramic studio and grounds, firing of all kilns, and organizing and scheduling the Summer Faculty with Executive Artistic Director.
Studios open at 8:45 a.m. and close at 5:00, staff ideally work on staggering 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (times will vary depending on evening workshops and firings)

Duties Include:
- Preparing studios for each workshop, cleaning up after use, closing down at the end of the day
- Assisting the faculty, checking attendance, and generally monitoring each class
- Maintaining equipment and supervising its use
- Firing of all kilns: electric, gas, salt/soda, wood, raku – have full knowledge off all firing techniques.
- Mixing glazes and managing all raw materials
- Scheduling of workshops for Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter in conjunction with Executive Artistic Director
- Assisting with administrative work
- Teaching children, teen, and adult classes in throwing and hand building year-round (Wednesday throwing/wood firings)
- Keeping grounds in order and all public spaces, i.e. bathrooms, gallery, landscaping, parking
- Assisting with Auction and other events as planned
- Assisting with the overseeing of interns and work study
- Working with the director to establish the needs and priorities of the Ceramic department
- Ordering all materials and supplies
- Contacting faculty members to determine workshop needs for materials and equipment
- Enforcing universal and safety precautions as described by director
- Supervise and monitor all firings
- To make plates or other clay items for the Auction (during the off season)
- Cleaning, inventory and closing the studios as needed
- Work with Executive Artistic Director regarding preparation of the studios and grounds in anticipation of the summer season, making necessary repairs, gardening, painting
Qualifications:
– Bachelors Degree in Ceramics, strong people skills, organized and a team player
– Must have a strong background in: ceramics and experience in firing all kilns as described above
Salary range:
$45,000 – $50,000 + benefits, full time, year round
