General Description of Position:
The Department of Art at Kansas State University seeks applicants for a one year Visiting Assistant Professor position in the Ceramics area, to begin August 2016. The art department confers both BFA and MFA degrees in ceramics. The Visiting faculty member’s responsibilities will include teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and supervising graduate teaching assistants. Applicants must have an MFA in ceramics and the ability to teach both hand building and throwing techniques are required. A strong record of exhibition, evidence of quality teaching, an understanding of gas-kiln, firing and maintenance, a knowledge of ceramic history and theory, strong writing and speaking skills, and a demonstrated commitment to the investigation of creative and intellectual issues through ceramic sculpture or the investigation of design issues (particularly as these concern ceramics and industry, sustainability or alternative materials through functional wares) are preferred.
Job Description:
Teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level (with a typical 3:3 teaching load), supervising graduate teaching assistants, supervising work study students, and helping to maintain the ceramics area facilities and budget.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
MFA in ceramics by the time of appointment; ability to teach hand building and throwing techniques; professional work that reflects a high level of technical ability and an understanding of and interest in contemporary issues in the field of ceramics and/or the broader field of art; an exhibition record reflecting a commitment to creative research.
Preferred Qualifications:
Evidence of quality teaching at the university level; commitment to sustained investigation of intellectual issues through ceramic sculpture or investigation of design issues concerning the ceramics and industry, sustainability or alternative materials through functional wares; ability to fire and maintain gas and electric kilns; knowledge of glaze technology appropriate for instructing undergraduate and graduate students; excellent writing and speaking skills; an interest in and ability to utilize new technologies; demonstrated teaching excellence.
