Nasty Women Exhibition at NCECA 2018

February 26, 2018 by Brian

Third Street Gallery, Artaxis, and NCECA are pleased to present NASTY WOMEN.

NASTY WOMEN, an exhibition sponsored by Artaxis and organized by Alex Kraft and Sara Parent-Ramos, is the juried winner of an internal call for Artaxis members to propose an exhibition that addresses NCECA’s 2018 exhibition theme: “Cross Currents: Clay and Culture.” In response to current events, Artaxis and the show organizers believe that now is the time to cultivate empathetic communities, and promote innovative approaches to ceramic art that express diverse and underrepresented experiences within our changing society.

NASTY WOMEN acknowledges that the word “nasty” has charged historical implications and recognizes its use in the suppression of women, particularly women of color. The exhibition re-appropriates the slur “nasty women,” and reinterprets the now infamous phrase as oppositional, socio-political currency for one of the most important issues of our time. Accordingly, the artists chosen for this exhibition demonstrate perspectives on what provocative political art can look like.

NASTY WOMEN, as curated by Kraft and Parent-Ramos, builds on the series of international NASTY WOMEN exhibitions (nastywomenexhibition.org) originally conceived by Artaxis member, Roxanne Jackson, and independent curator Jessamyn Fiore. Sometimes explicit, sometimes subtle, but always subversive, the exhibition features the work of ten female artists.

As part of the Artaxis’ NASTY WOMEN exhibition, the gallery will host a cash-and-carry fundraiser during the opening reception that will directly benefit the Women and Girls Foundation in Pittsburgh, PA. In pursuit of its mission to achieve equality for women and girls, now and for generations to come, WGF breaks down barriers so that every girl can rise and every woman can soar. WGF supports women in the local community through their three core programs: Femisphere, which reimagines Pittsburgh as an ecosystem where women and girls can thrive; GirlGov, which trains the future leaders of America; and the campaign for Paid Leave for PA, which fights for paid family and medical leave for all Pennsylvanians. 100% of the sales from the cash-and-carry event will go directly to this incredible organization. You can find more about them at: http://wgfpa.org.

  • Exhibiting artists include: Jennifer Degges, Lauren Sandler, Teri Frame, Jeanine Hill, Roxanne Jackson, Alex Kraft, Sara Parent-Ramos, Sasha Koozel Reibstein, Shalene Valenzuela, and Shiyuan Xu.
  • There will be a gallery talk organized by Sasha Koozel Reibstein and Roxanne Jackson taking place before the opening reception at 5PM on Friday, March 16th.
  • A cash-and-carry fundraiser with items from $25-$100 will be available at the opening reception. All proceeds from the sales will go to the Women and Girls Foundation.
