Oversees the daily operations of the Museum including visitor services, business office and related administrative functions, and is responsible for monitoring and tracking the strategic plan of the organization as well as developing, managing, and implementing marketing strategies for the organization that will result in audience growth and increased visibility. Responsibilities include research and identification of funding resources, facilitating grant writing, as well as assisting University Relations with fundraising activities, events, and liaisons with key stakeholders within Alfred University’s administrative structure and across all donor constituencies.The Coordinator facilitates the Museum’s mission through outreach and program coordination with all educational and administrative constituencies on the Alfred University campus as well as the local, regional, national, and international community. Also supervises museum attendants and student work-study assistants, as well as occasional contracted staff.
Maintains the museum website keeping it up to date and coordinated with Alfred University, as well as facilitating all public relations activity regarding outreach on social media resources.
Requirements:
BFA in Ceramic or Studio Art required; MFA desired. Knowledge of ceramic art; proficiency in handling a variety of media; computer proficiency; and excellent communication and time-management skills.Experience:

Preparator & Exhibitions Coordinator:

Coordinator is a key member of the Art Museum team. Oversees all necessary activities in the preparation and installation of art from the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, which may include the sensitive area of incoming and outgoing loans.Provides strategic vision in planning and implementation all installation-related activity including the development and supervision of exhibition design, fabrication, construction, installation and de-installation as well as general detailing of the museum gallery space with special attention to lighting design.
Takes an exhibition project from preliminary research to opening, and manages the design to fabrication process assuming physical work as needed in art installation and preparation as well as illustrates ideas and solutions via hand-sketching and rendering, 3D modeling and computer aided design and construction documents.
Plans, prioritizes and schedules work in close consultation with the museum director, curator of collections, guest curators, artists, conservators and staff in order to design and produce exhibitions and install art works while insuring the highest quality workmanship and attention to detail. This includes, but is not limited to: shipping/packing and unpacking of art work, construction of display furniture, matting and framing, production of graphics, signage, labels, wall construction – painting, lighting display – as well as assisting periodic inventory of the collection.
Supervises part-time staff hired to assist in the planning, construction and installation phase of each exhibition. In the case of student assistants, a teaching component is to be expected.
Oversees the condition and appearance of permanent and temporary exhibits, identifies problem areas and recommends solutions, facilitates necessary repair and coordinates all work with all other museum departments, cleaning when necessary in regard to safe guarding fragile art works beyond the routine attention of the building.
Maintains the principal oversight for the physical plant of the Art Museum as a whole, and collaborates with maintenance crews assigned to the museum by Alfred University.
Requirements:
MFA degree with extensive concentration in studio art preferred.Knowledge of ceramic art, historically, conceptually and technically as well as general conversational knowledge of Art History.
Proficiency in handling a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, textiles, works-on-paper, furniture, ceramics, metalwork, glass, jewelry, stone, film, video, digital imagery, and time-based media, as well as knowledge of the exhibition furniture required to display and support such art. Familiarity with architectural and design plans.
Computer proficiency – spreadsheet and CAD, additional multi-media awareness with skills in audiovisual exhibition requirements and installation as deemed necessary (aware of technical advances in new media and the AV industry).
Knowledge of design – must have strong analytical skills to assess and evaluate design including the ability to produce working drawings, develop and implement design concepts. Proven excellence in showing creativity, aesthetic sensibility, ingenuity, and problem solving including the ability to asses the cost of appropriate exhibit programming for the museum as well as the ability to prepare cost estimates and budgetary outlines with attention to sound purchasing.
Ability to explain and carry out methods and procedures related to proper care, handing and transporting irreplaceable works of art. Understanding of basic conservation issues.
Knowledge of construction planning and tools as well as highly developed carpentry skills and the use of a wide variety of materials with an attention to excellent craftsmanship. Ability to solve problems associated with lifting and moving of heavy objects. (Handling 2 and 3D art works in various materials, sizes, and weights as well as attending to rigging and lighting concepts).
Must have highly developed skills regarding the use of diverse hand and power tools (including cabinet and shop equipment of varying sizes and complexity), moving van, hydraulic lifts, dollies, etc. Must have good dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and ability to climb and to work on ladders for extended periods of time; to reach works of art above shoulder level; to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds); and to stand or to walk for an eight-hour work day.
Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures; and valid drivers license and ability to travel and currier objects as necessary.
Excellent communication and time-management skills related to organizing, leading, and working with living artists and collaborating with colleagues across departments are required. Interpersonal skills (establish and maintain effective working relationships) in general are very important as well as the ability to work well under pressure. Effective communication skills are particular to supervising student work-study, part-time staff and volunteers. A sense of humor and the desire to achieve excellence while working for the benefit of the whole organization are essential.
Experience:
