Through an artistic process that explores the intersections of the public and private spheres, I strive to question our awareness of self and of others.
My conceptual ploy stems from strategies manipulated by social activists during the 1980’s AIDS epidemic. The use of traditional social marketing tools such as billboards, neon signs, and marquees permeated a familiar format to expose a poignant message. Colorful, candy coated sweet treats and their irresistible deliciousness toy with the notion that temptation and desire allow us to be drawn to what we don’t even realize is present.
The use of multiples obscures the sexual references that influence the objects I create. Crafting an inconspicuous exterior is a strategy used to display objects that reference the private parts of people’s lives, issues concerning, sexuality, gender and identity that are typically kept hidden.
