The Memory of Water tries to capture this elemental relationship of creation and destruction between water and clay. The water does not exist in the clay object anymore, but it has left behind its memory.

Size: 0.5-meter x 1.7 meters A calm lake. A rhythmic river. A turbulent ocean. Water is alive with emotions and the Moods of Water explores these emotions. Like the mood itself, each piece is unique and distinct with its own story. As my building element, I have used the form of a river pebble, a form created by water to express the various ways in which we experience water.

Artist Statement
I believe in living without fear; I try and extend that belief to my work- that it should express freely, uninhibitedly, from within.
My emotions are simple – a shared moment with a stranger, sadness, claustrophobia or beauty. I translate these into my clay, something that can be seen, touched and felt. It is my emotion, my work, my worship.

Bio
Rekha Goyal is a Mumbai based ceramic artist. Over the last 19 years, she has worked on installations and murals for private and public spaces, designed ceramic products under her own studio as well as for boutique lifestyle brands, been a part of the education space and projects in art therapy and artisanal craft.
A few years ago, she created a community ceramic studio in the heart of Mumbai dedicated to the education of the craft making ceramic art easily accessible to the local community and creating a craft space that has also become a therapeutic practice for people using the space. She has been profiled in varied publications for her work in the art and community space.
An avid traveller, she has been widely quoted for her entrepreneurial work in setting-up one of India’s first networks of homestays. She has advised women groups in rural areas on generating livelihoods through sustainable tourism. She has also trained in the Indian classical dances of Bharatnatyam and Kathak for 9 years.
Rekha Goyal was born in Mumbai in 1979 and spent her early years in South America. She has been running her ceramic art & pottery studio in Mumbai since 1999. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fine art with a specialisation in ceramics from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai and did her masters in Art in Architecture, London.
