2018 Artaxis Conversations

Artaxis Conversations 2018 took place from 11 AM until 9 PM (EST) on Tuesday October 9th, during National Clay Week. On Artaxis’ Facebook page, we released 47 video talks in batches of 4 – 7 presentations, each grouping was then followed by a short, but live-streamed, Q & A session with one of the group’s presenters. The full schedule and all of the videos are posted below.

The theme of the 2018 National Clay Week was “Industry”. Artaxis was interested in presenting a broad perspective on what this means. But what does “industry” mean? The word alone conjures images of Karl Marx and soot-covered factory workers: Capitalists against the Proletariat. Indeed, invocation of the word carries with it the baggage of all manufacture since the onset of the industrial revolution, and this vision has largely dominated the social perception of “Industry.” Historically, the definition of industry originated with the individual, in the idea of the skillful, the clever and ingenious, and in the notion of hard work. And what Industry may mean in the future is only now emerging.

Del Harrow lecture

Del Harrow is one of the leaders in new technologies within the ceramics field, and on October 4, 2018, he lectured at Illinois Wesleyan University as part of the Anthony E Stellaccio Visiting Artist & Lecture Series. As part of Artaxis Conversations, this lecture was re-recorded for the internet by the artist, exclusively for Artaxis. It was presented on the Artaxis Facebook page by our International Coordinator, Anthony Stellaccio, on October 8, and will also be included on our YouTube channel and here on the Artaxis Conversations webpage.

Garth Johnson

8:15pm EST

Garth Johnson, Curator of Ceramics at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York discusses the industrial history of Syracuse, Onandaga Pottery, and the curatorial work he has done with artists that use industrial approaches in their work. Garth also discusses his work with Mission Clay in Phoenix, Arizona. He traces that project to an exhibition he put together for the ASU museum of the work of brothers Tom Franco and the actor, James Franco. He ends with a discussion about finding and supporting the local ceramic industries in your own area.

Anthony Stellaccio interviews Wendy Gers

8:30pm EST

In August of this year, our International Coordinator caught up with international curator and critic, Wendy Gers, at her home in Saint Nazaire, France. Gers has curated exhibitions and symposia, lectured, and published in Israel, China, Taiwan, and all over the world. Gers’ formidable knowledge of contemporary global ceramics and her political and social consciousness make her one of the most important curators in the field of ceramics today. This interview took place casually between two friends and colleagues on a journey through France. Enjoy!
